Does the computer shows the login screen, are you able to log into your account?

Where exactly do you get the black screen, is it the desktop screen or is it the login screen?

Do you have Windows installation Disc with you?

What is the exact model for your computer?

This issue might occur if there is incompatible software installed on the computer or display drivers are not up to date

You can try the following to troubleshoot on the issue.

Method 1: If you are able to see the login screen you can try to start the computer in Safe Mode.
Safe mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. Startup programs don't run in safe mode, and only the basic drivers needed to start Windows are installed. You can refer the below link to see how to boot the computer in safe mode.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-8

If you are able to log into the computer I would suggest you to perform a clean boot to check if any third party application is causing the issue, as clean boot helps in eliminating software conflicts.

A Clean Boot state helps us identify conflicting applications (third party programs) interfering with functioning of the application. Refer the article to boot the computer in Clean boot.

Note: Please go through the section: How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot of the Kb article to boot the computer in normal startup after fixing the issue.

Method 2: If you don’t have installation disc I would suggest you to create an installation media and try to perform automatic repair and check if it helps in fixing the issue. You will not be able to create an installation disc without a product key.

How to create installation media for a PC refresh or reset:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media

To perform automatic repair follow the below steps:
Put in the Windows 8 installation disk and restart the computer.
Boot from the disc and click on repair your computer.
From the Choose an option screen, tap or click Troubleshoot. Next, tap or click the Advanced options, and
then tap or click Automatic Repair.

Method 3: I would suggest you to perform a system restore on the computer and check if it helps. To perform a system restore you can follow the below link.
Put in the Windows 8 installation disk and restart the computer.
Boot from the disc and click on repair your computer.
From the Choose an option screen, tap or click Troubleshoot. Click on Advanced
Options and then click on System
restore and follow the onscreen instructions.

Note: When you use System Restore to restore the computer to a previous state, programs and updates that you installed are removed.
