Can I downgrade from windows 8?

I have recently purchased a new PC with windows 8 on it. My new PC is not a touch screen so it is a bit of a nightmare to use. I want to downgrade to an earlier version of windows any tips on how I can do this without costing me the earth? If not it's back to the store for my PC and I, for the first time ever, will buy an Apple computer!! Please help

Yes, the new Windows 8 "Metro" user interface is "frustrating" when not used on a touch enabled screen. There are "guides" that can / will help you turn off the Metro interface. There are additional softwares that can add back the older Windows 7 Start "button."
