How do I use my External Hard Drive on Windows 8?

got it as a gift I was trying to use it but then I deleted the volume accidentally (im stupid) And now I'm stuck and I don't know what to do. I can't preform any tasks with it, like I can't do anything other than view its properties. .___. I need to use it, and I need help ASAP! Also, I read somewhere that it's possible that I need to format it to be compatible with Windows, but I don't even correctly understand what that means!

On your desktop, right click on COMPUTER and select Manage...
In the window that opens, select Disk Management...
Most likely the first thing to happen will be a notice that a drive needs INITIALIZED...
If you drive is 2TB or less, select MBR. If it is larger, select GPT...
When the option comes up select NTFS... Leave everything else at default...
You can name the Volume if you wish, and you can create several "Volumes" as well...
