Updates and SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION

Q

There are some updates that are not installing to my computer, they either download but fail to install or don't download at all. I am running Windows 8 x64 and I'm getting an error SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION that forces my computer to restart but the problem is not fixed. However, there are no files in the C:\Windows\Minidump directory to upload so you can check it for me. What can I do?

Also, there aren't any updates available for my sound card therefore my speakers and headphones are separated hence I have to switch them manually, any suggestions?

From the issue description, I understand that you have issues with installing updates on Windows 8 computer.

I would really appreciate if you can help me with the following information.

1. When do you receive SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION error?
2. Did you make any changes on the computer prior to this issue?

The SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION bug check has a value of 0x0000003B. This indicates that an exception happened while executing a routine that transitions from non-privileged code to privileged code.

To troubleshoot Windows Update issue, I would suggest you to refer to the methods and check if it helps.

Method 1
I would suggest you to run the Windows update Troubleshooter. Here is the link for your reference.

Method 2
Disable the third party anti-virus program and try to install it.

I would suggest you to disable the anti-virus program that you have and then try to install the update.

Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Method 3
Put the computer in clean boot and check if it helps.
By setting your system in clean boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue.
