ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. ADSL is one form of DSL that divids the frequency range above the voice communication range into two parts: one for download and one for upload as shown in the picture below: ADSL Frequency Ranges.

This division is called asymmetric because of the download range is much larger than the upload range.
