To find out if you are on a Virtual Machine of Windows Server 2008, you can do the following:

1. Open the PowerShell command window, and type in the "systeminfo" command as shown below:

PS C:\Users\fyicenter> systeminfo
...
System Manufacturer:       Microsoft Corporation
System Model:              Virtual Machine
System Type:               x64-based PC
BIOS Version:              American Megatrends Inc. 090006 , 5/23/2012
Windows Directory:         C:\Windows
...

2. Check the output. If you see "System Model: Virtual Machine", then you are on a Virtual Machine. Otherwise, you are on a real physical machine.
