.dat is the file name extension for VCD media files. A .dat file (DAT file) is really a MPEG-1 file modified for VCD encoded with both audio and video information:

Number of Channels: 2 (stereo)
Video information format: MPEG-1

DAT files are usually copied from directly from VCD discs.
