the operating system's runtime environment.
The .NET Framework runtime environment is also called the Common Language Runtime (CLR).
CLR provides a virtual machine to its running applications, like JVM (Java Virtual Machine) for Java applications.

.NET Framework 1.1 - Released in 2003
