Windows Media Player won't recognize external DVD drive - so how to watch a DVD movie?

Q

I just connected an external DVD-RW drive to my Windows 8 ultrabook for the first time. The ultrabook recognizes the drive and the dvd movie therein but Windows Media Player doesn't - just says "connect a device". The troubleshooter says the drive is working properly. I can't copy this movie to the Video Library as it's a borrowed DVD. So, how do I get WMP to recognize the DVD drive and play the movie?

A
DVD playback can only be achieved in windows 8 Media center Pro. Windows 8 Media player does not have native DVD codecs added to it. You have an option to purchase a upgrade to your Windows 8 which is Media Center Pack to enable DVD playback on your computer. ** Note: Media center pack is only an upgrade for existing Windows 8 computers.
