Why is cmd window size limited to largest monitor?

When using multiple monitors, I cannot make a cmd.exe window any larger than the largest of my monitors (for example, span it across 3 monitors). Why is that? And is there a way around it? Other windows like notepad does not have this limitation.

The command line can only show a specific number of columns of letters from left to right, and this number is locked in place based on legacy since the 1980's when the command prompt was first built. It's not related to your monitor size or anything, just the number of letters it can show in a row.
