Win 8 crashes while trying to sleep

Q

My Sony Windows 8 laptop (SVE14A27CDH) is having problems going to sleep and waking up. It usually works, but sometimes when it "sleeps", instead of 10 seconds of preparing to sleep, the screen goes blank and then it spends 10 minutes doing something, and when I "unsleep" the computer later, it just reboots.

I thought it might have something to do with the WIFI - the WIFI has had some problems prior to this problem, and I have updated the Intel wifi drivers 2-3 times using the Intel website driver update thing. The wifi used to just drop, and then when I tried to reconnect, or switch the Airplane mode on and off to wake it up, the computer would get confused with the airplane mode stuck in "turning on" or "turning off", and the only solution was a reboot.

The computer is pretty simple - just the original software and office, and the only unusual thing is a 2 year old Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop Receiver 2.1 -- which may or may not be plugged in when the problem occurs. And I also plug in a usb disk at times, but again, no particular connection to the sleep problems.

Any ideas or advice??? Anyone know if Hibernate instead of sleep would avoid the problem.
Here is some stuff from the event log that looked unusual.

Because third party security drivers can sometimes cause the 0x9F error I am going to suggest, at least temporarily, to uninstall Kaspersky and use just Windows 8 built-in antivirus (Windows Defender) and firewall. Also, update or uninstall, at least temporarily, TrueCrypt.
