Activating Windows 8 Pro

I've recently bought the Windows 8 Pro student upgrade pack from Microsoft stores hoping to install it in my new hybrid hard drive. I already have Windows Vista on my older hard drive but I've taken that hard drive out after downloading and burning Windows 8 onto a DVD. I installed Windows 8 on the new hybrid hard drive and after installation, I noticed that it says "Product ID not available" in My Computer's Properties.
Noticing this, I went to control panel to activate my Windows 8 Pro but after entering the product in the Activate Windows section, my product key doesn't seem to work.
How do activate Windows 8 if that's the case? Do I need my previous hard drive that contains Vista plugged into the computer's 2nd partition or switch it with the one currently running Windows 8 Pro?

To install an upgrade version of Windows 8, you must already have Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP installed on your PC. If you formatted the drive before the upgrade version of Windows 8 was installed, you won't be able to use your upgrade product key to activate Windows 8. To activate Windows 8, you'll need to install your previous version of Windows, and then reinstall Windows 8. For help with the activation process, contact support.
