Wanted to change settings of Email account on Mail App

I have just set my email in Outlook.com to "send and receive".
Two things now happen.
In the W8 Mail app all mail appears as "read" even though I have not read it.
When I delete Mail in the Mail app it does not delete in Outlook.com
Does anybody know what I am doing wrong?

As per the description, I understand that your email account which is configured on your Mail App shows email with different settings. You might need to change the settings from the settings of Mail App or with the Settings of Outlook.com.

Following are the steps to go to the settings of Mail App.
Click on Start button to go to Start screen.
Click to Open Mail App.
Press Windows + C, Charms bar on Mail App would appear from right side of your screen.
Go through the settings and details of the Email account which you have setup on your Mail App.
