IE 7 Alexa Toolbar Files and Configuration
What files are used by Alexa Toolbar for Internet Explorer (IE) 7 browser? How Alexa Toolbar is configured on your system?
✍: FYIcenter.com
Whenever an Internet Explorer (IE) 7 browser add-on (toolbar) is installed,
you should check your system to see what files are used by this add-on tool,
and how it is configured on your system.
What files are used by Alexa Toolbar? Using the file explore, you should be able to find the following files:
C:\Program Files\Alexa Toolbar\uninstall.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\AlxRes.dll C:\WINDOWS\System32\AlxTB1.dll
How Alexa Toolbar is configured on your system? Using HijackThis, you should be able to find the following extra lines in the HijackThis scan report:
O2 - BHO: AlxTB BHO - {F1FABE79-25FC-46de-8C5A-2C6DB9D64333} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\AlxTB1.dll O3 - Toolbar: Alexa - {3CEFF6CD-6F08-4e4d-BCCD-FF7415288C3B} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\SHDOCVW.DLL O8 - Extra context menu item: Alexa Web Search - http://client.alexa.com/holiday/script/actions/searc... O8 - Extra context menu item: Write a Review... - http://client.alexa.com/holiday/script/actions/revie...
The setting related to C:\WINDOWS\System32\SHDOCVW.DLL is kind of strange, because SHDOCVW.DLL is a Windows system DLL file. Why Alexa Toolbar is using a Windows system DLL to serve its function directly?
